Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty

What is it for:

Individuals can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging.  The most common causes are pregnancy, aging, significant fluctuations in weight, heredity and prior surgery. The use of tobacco and nicotine products will compromise the result of this surgery.

What does it do:

Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer.   A tummy tuck may be a formal or full one where skin and tissue is removed along with repair to the abdominal wall, and liposuction.  A mini or modified tummy tuck will remove minimum skin, sometimes repair the abdominal wall and remove a lot of fat with liposuction.

What it does not do:

A tummy tuck cannot correct all the stretch marks, although some will be removed or somewhat improved if they are located on the areas of excess skin that will be excised, generally those treated areas below the belly button. It gives a board flat tummy but not a hour glass figure. A tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight lossof 20% or more BMI.   Although the results of a tummy tuck are technically permanent, the positive outcome can be greatly diminished by significant fluctuations in your weight or future pregnancies.

Expect to have:

General anesthesia is used. Surgery takes several hours. One would require a caregiver if surgery is done as an outpatient.  One would require help at home for at least 3-5 days following the surgery.  Time off from work and/or school should be at least 14 days and full exercise and activities do not resume for 6 weeks.
